Hélène de Mees invites us to the sublime. With a powerful gesture, the artist of 1993, with a striking technical maturity, exalts in her portraits her fascination for the human and its interiority. With a negative line where the organic of the dry chalk becomes light, she reveals on the darkness of her backgrounds figures between intimacy and unconsciousness. From these silhouettes, both familiar and unknown, photographed, she draws the mirror of the soul. From this captured double, she transcends the essence, the clarity of the eye, the sensuality of a gesture, the posture of a hand. Above all, she brings out from the material, from her eminently contemporary drawings, a vibratory energy that sets the darkness ablaze.
The light emerges from the darkness to deliver us by a fascinating hyperrealism the interiority of her models. The white of the dry chalk comes to caress the material with a powerful chiaroscuro made on the ground. Through a hand-to-hand with the pigment Hélène de Mees reveals the human, his aura, the quintessence of his being. Through a penetrating plastic vocabulary and strong contrasts she brings out from the inanimate a glimmer of life crystallized in her tracings. By a systemic addition of matter, she gives body to a new ecology of the image where the soul overflows its representation, where the gestures, the prophetic glance of her subjects catch us.
“If you look into the abyss for a long time, the abyss also looks into you.” The abyss in Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil reveals a psychology of depths that can be read in the background of his works. Beneath the chalk surface it opens a breach in the intimacy of his models. Even more she opens a path to the unconscious. She plunges us by the fineness of the details of a seismic writing into the heart of prophetic signs, as in the heart of the materiality of the work. It emanates a contemplation of the abyss, of this abyssal blackness from which emerges in the power of the unconscious gesture a sensitive geography. The raw soul of her technique, the lightning of her stroke thus liberates an aura, a soul, like a glimmer of hope in the human being.
