‘Unknownmemories’ is the title of the show by Bettina Reisky, a German contemporary artist, born in Munich, the city where she lives and practises in freelance graphics, as she divides her time between the Bavarian capital and Salzburg.
The interactive show, organised by the Sineresi Art Review, amid the milieu of international exhibitions, analyses two processes, which are key to Bettina Reisky’s methodology; to its documentation and creation. Bettina Reisky is an artist who paints time through past memories, where the record does not correspond purely to the act of remembering something familiar, but rather references itself to something unknown, abstract and purely individual; something that endows representative form with life.
In her practice, while everything links to history, it is not necessarily tied to the past; everything is perceived as an interpretation of life, of that which has happened, yet arises only from fragments of memory, abstracted in the material’s sculpted form. The works of the Munich-originating artist place themselves as materials of the true and singular sculptures which take shape via Bettina Reisky’s expert hands, assuming incarnate, visible, bulky forms; a theatre of interior spaces — or just of infinitesimal parts of those spaces. There is, in her works, a geometric element that takes on great importance: surfaces, structures and colours.
The narrative remains course and irregular, without any coherent homogeny, over-arching design, or even pattern discernible in the production technique. In Bettina Reisky’s practice, the vision of the existence of distinct, uncomplicated characters, in the tradition of the centuries, is no more. From the outset of the 1950’s avantguardists’ movement, the idea of visual art transforms, with the same material manifesting work, the intrigue of which lies variously in provocation, violence, anxiety and disquiet. Artists take material and transform it; its molecules become ideas of experiment, the surface triggers of shape. The voyage of discovery from figurative art to that representative of the human psyche is a key journey for understanding the artistic movements of the post war years. The introduction of new material that is true and unique to the core of
the work indicates breaking an indefinable confine, and the throwing open of the gates to the exploration of a new communicative strength, which challenges the output of international contemporary artists such as Alberto Burri, Jean Dubuffet and Antoni Tapies.
Everything changes, with nothing immutable, so, in the general evolution of historical and artistic movements, as in the work of Bettina Reisky, the connection between material and time takes on a vital role: the role of the past becoming essential for understanding the present.
The thirty nine works in the show, all combine with a layer of faint, rather faded colour, made of powdered rock and chalk, and decipherable as an indelible patina — the legacy of time — which invites us to reflect on the transience of the moment, in a life in which nothing is eternal, and an existence which always has a beginning and an end — and which is the more fragile and precious for that. In Bettina Reisky’s art, not even the works achieve eternity. It is awareness of precariousness, and of the ephemeral, which end ows some of her more significant pieces with life: an elusive, indeterminable fabric, that escapes form, and pin points that process through which everything is born, mutates and, ultimately,
is extinguished. The observer is filled with a feeling of strong melancholia and sadness, yet — at the same time — the surface screated, and their closeness to natural forms, exude a sense of strength, beauty and comfort. It is, once again, the fascination with sublime nature, which the artist submits and reworks, making abstract forms and images which — although not present in our visual experience — constitute part of our memory’s unconscious. So it is that Bettina Reisky’s art blossoms in the field of neuroscience, and in the paradox of memory without record,
where it befalls the unconscious to retrace and probe a past experience, without having access to pre-existing memories — and somehow family members, in their view, though still unknown and abstract.
Abstractism plays a pivotal role in the Monocense artist’s practice: as her hallmark, Bettina Reisky intentionally avoids precision in the development of a work, because abstractism is an impression, and it is the impression which generates a strong emotional charge, in addition to conferring more space in a technical sense onto the surfaces. As the protagonist of this exhibition will state, attraction to the abstract form derives from the strict relationship which connects the abstract and the rocky painting, made of signs and representations not immediately recogniseable, which demand a great leap of the imagination for the work to be communicated.
The draw of the ancestral, echoes in Bettina Reisky’s work, which infuses her creations with an archaic, mythological divinity, like that of Inanna, Mesopotamian Queen of the Skies and goddess of two fold nature, and Utu, her twin brother.
The past lives from the artist’s memory, amid the need for that which pertains now, that which has preceded it, and that which is to come.
Without memory, there would be neither art, nor progress — nor even the dream of eternity.
