VIA PUBBLICA

PUBLIC ROAD
NOTES ON THE RECENT WORK OF SANTIAGO ALDABALDE
A car stops. An artist comes quickly out of it, wafer a few meters, gets up to a wall where an important number of posters have piled up, one on top of the other, building up a compact layer on the wall. He takes them off quickly, looks at them for a second, rolls them up, puts them in the trunk of the car and keeps going. This little, almost unimportant event should not be taken as an action or performance by artist Santiago Aldabalde. It’s, however, a tale of the encounter with some material -undoubtedly priced- that will be the main base of his artistic work; it is, eventually, a fundamental finding for the genesis of this new series of works, generically called Vía Pública.
The use of the poster taken from the street and presented with or without modification as a work of art – procedure that is generally called décollage – used to be a common practice from the mid 50s, but there are precedents from the end on the 1940s by a group of European artists living in Paris, termed, among others, by Jacques Villeglé, Raymond Hains, François Dufrêne, MimmoRotella o Wolf Vostells.
They had as a precedent the tradition of the Dadaist collage and they were soaked in the situationist ideology and its practices, for example the one called derive (drift): the unexpected encounter with these posters that are taken off and then exposed happens as the consequence of a long walk around the city- Paris in this case – without any plan or direction previously set.
But these practices and works of art are far from the forms and interests dealt by Aldabalde in the latest months. It could perhaps be remotely related with artist Jean-Charles Blais, closer in time – they both take the posters and paint on one of their sides – but the greatest difference is that the work of art produced by this French artist during all the 1980s and part of the 90s was figurative, characterized by a hermetic and erudite narrative.
There were two sources which were fundamental to outline sane precedent that allowed us to set a reference or aesthetic affinity important for the artist at the time of the genesis of these pieces. The first one is the interest and seduction that Aldabalde shows for the informalist artists who outlined the Uruguayan artistic landscape between the end of the 1950s and the mid 60s, as Hilda López, Jorge Páez Vilaró, Juan Ventayol, Raúl Pavlotzky y Heber Rolandi among many others.
The other important element is that Aldabalde was a pupil ofNelson Ramos; this artist, who is fundamental for our cultural knitting, used for almost two decades and almost exclusively two fundamental materials: paper and wood. With them he produced works and objects in which both elements were handed with a high level of sophistication. This resulted in works that were extremely seductive and also ambiguous from a semantic point of view, setting a permanent tension between the shapes created and their possible meanings. Not only cultural references but also private ones seemed to be crossed by humor and nostalgia.
We can understand these works of art as an update of that legacy, when he works from the surface of the piece as the field or geography of all possible creative experiences, and at the same time, lightening at the utmost the symbolic and contextual significance of the materials and the image produced on them. In this sense, the interest of the artist for this material – the poster taken off from the street – is connected to the chance of working with an element which is extremely rich in textiles and, at the same line, ambiguous about its own materiality.
Although it is just paper mired with glue, as it has a very bad quality and was exposed to the outdoors for some time, it is in a state of degradation that will take it, in some way to is initial state. As we all know, paper-is made from cellulose taken from trees, which is dyed in its characteristic white color. Through fast degradation because of its low quality and exposure, it quickly takes a dark ocher color that seems to symbolically take it back to its original or natural state, that is to say a piece of a tree, specially its bark.
To reinforce this condition the artist does not use the printed front of the posters but their backs, which mire glued to the wall. As we know informalist artists were particularly interested in textures present in verydifferent materials, especially wood.
But the artist does not want to hide the primary condition of this element, which is the fact that it is a poster used to pass advertising information in an urban context. Then, in the rich texture -half way between wood and paper- of the surface of the piece, the artist articulates a permanent game of tensions between elements taken from the posters: words, letters, and painted by himself as geometric shapes and colored spaces worked as veils.
Sonic is a characteristic example of this new series of pieces. It allows us to perceive how formal elements and their possible meanings – previously mentionedarticulate. Although it has an irregular shape, as most of the pieces in the series, it is basically horizontal and its main elements have different shades of a foggy and dirty green color that irregularly spreads all over the surface; three more or less precise geometric shapes, and some more, such as a cross and three black circles; finally the word “sonic”, located on the right of the composition.
The title of the piece does not offer any anchorage suggesting that it has a concrete message. It rather is a reference to that condition of poster that the support holds and that the artist does not want to hide completely The surface of this piece, between harsh and voluptuous, catches our attention and makes us go through it, scanning this rich geography of color and textures. In that slow journey we suddenly stop at a red line, in rectangle of the same color; in a word with no apparent meaning; these elements bring us memories and relations that we cannot figure out nor understand, like a memory of signs and significances that lives in us and is abruptly activated. A memory built by living in a city saturated by signs spread in the space.
Then, what the artist articulates in its compositions, where the dialectic relation between ephemeral and concrete, between geometric shapes and space, between a texture and a symbol are in permanent tension, is the building of a crust of urban reality In conclusion, the representation of the comp/ex texture that surrounds our impersonal and sensual, brutal and ephemeral urban reality
